Telva Launches Obsidian™ Limited Range IR Light

On August 22nd, 2023, Telva announced the launch of ObsidianTM, a revolutionary IR lighting device. Obsidian is a unique illuminator, because it exhibits a very limited and controllable range, making it virtually undetectable from afar. The launch of the first member of Telva’s Obsidian product family coincides with the opening of DALO Industry Days 2023, the defence sector event held in Ballerup, Denmark.

According to Joe Pimenoff, Director of Business Development at Telva and present at DALO Industry Days for the launch: “Together with conventional night-vision goggles (NVG’s), Obsidian functions like any other IR illuminator in the immediate vicinity of the device, but its light is literally undetectable beyond a certain range. This is a definite game-changer, not merely an improvement in covert lighting capabilities.”

Situational awareness and the ability to conduct close-range functions, such as driving vehicles or preparing camp, is key to covert operations, as well as operational and tactical activities. Using conventional IR lighting together with NVG’s is possible, but due to the recent proliferation of night-vision capabilities on a global scale, conventional IR lighting is no longer a guarantee that one can operate undetected. This is why having an IR light with limited and controllable range is both new and coveted.

Telva Managing Director, Tapani Hollmén, commenting the launch of Obsidian, says: “We are proud to be bringing such a unique lighting product to the market. Given the enthusiastic reception of the technology and the first product, Obsidian definitely fills a need in today’s covert lighting. Following the extensive development and field-testing work, it is truly gratifying to be delivering the first batch of Obsidian lights to a customer by the end of this year.”

Telva Obsidian is an IR light suitable for mounting on vehicles, both as a retrofit application and early-stage integration. The light is powered by external battery and controlled via a remote control unit or serial bus.
